Support Small Business

I have been looking into starting an antique shop. Since I am a long term Lenexa resident I began my search here. I found several locations but when I called the city about fees... I was astonished at how high they were.

I contacted Shawnee and Merriam and their fees were much lower as well as more specific than those here.

When the time comes to open the shop I will be looking in Shawnee as they seem to be more small business friendly.

I realize that Lenexa prefers to draw big business but there should still be some room for the little guy. There also seems to be a different set of regulations for businesses like Gomer's -vs- a small business such as a candy store or dog groomer.

I would love to be able to open my shop close to home, Old Town would be great, but unless things change that is not a possibility.

Natatorium/Aquatic Center

With the large numbers of youth swimmers in Lenexa and the surrounding areas, a natatorium or aquatic center would be a terrific addition. A facility that could be used year round and could serve not only competitive swimming but also provide a family venue such as an indoor waterpark could be a big draw. think birthday parties, swim lessons, swim leagues, etc. Many teams currently travel out of the area multiple weekends per month to compete. Cities such as Lawrence (Aquatic Center) and Topkea (Hummer Natatorium) have these venues and reap the benefits of increased revenues to the city (hotels/restaurants/shopping) during the events which are typically held Friday night through Saturday. Competitive youth swimming regularly draws 500 swimmers to an event. End of season competition draws folks not only from Kansas but surrounding states as well. End of season Kansas high school state championships are held in Topeka with over 50% of the competitors from the Lenexa/Johnson County area. Many year round Lenexa swimmers particpate on club teams which are not located in Lenexa. Summer leagues are huge, Lenexa currently supports 125-150 swimmers per year. Competitive summer swim meets shut down city pools for 7-8 days minimum each year. Other Johnson County cities are looking into becoming a premier swimming location, should Lenexa be left out? If built for both the competitive and recreational swimmers, Lenexans would all benefit through increased revenues and year round opportunities for increased physical fitness.

Santa Fe Trail Construction/Silent Crossings

Why can't "silent crossings" at Noland and Pflumm roads also be included in this project. It seems the Lenexa City government has forgotten all about those of us who are becoming hearing impaired by the noise level at this juncture. It is "noise pollution" of the worst kind, and make no mistake about it, it is causing damage. The mayor and city council needs to focus on the health and welfare of its citizens instead of primarily focusing on building monuments at City Center Square. A new sales tax added on to two further taxes that Johnson County is trying to impose is going to empty the cookie jar for many of us that live on fixed incomes. the monies expended to hire a "naturalist" to educate children on what birds are being seen and what trees are growing in the park could have been expended in much more important endeavors. If children need to learn these kinds of things from a "naturalist", then "school teachers" are not doing their jobs. The city of Lenexa needs to live within their budgets, and not continue to initiate sales and increase property taxes simply to support an infrastructure that is out of control from greedy developers, and city planning that can't say enough is enough or just plain "no".

Hypocrisy and Misuse of Water Shed Tax Money

I live on the corner of 90^th Place and Pflumm; this has been my home for 21 years and that of my husband’s family for many years prior to that.

Our house is in a bog, a swamp, a watershed retention pool and for 6 years I have dealt with every possible person in the city of Lenexa to get resolution to this problem. Then along came this extra tax to fix the very issues that I am experiencing yet my problem continues to get worse and now we are being asked to vote on an additional tax monies for the Rain to Recreation watershed issue. Excuse me while I laugh aloud.

The problem is that the cul-de-sac behind me has no storm drainage system other than through my backyard, I also take on the storm water and pesticides from the houses on my side of the block up the hill from me. Oh, and let’s not forget the run off from the Catholic Church School parking lot which is filled with oil and the toxins that go along with asphalt parking lots. All of this makes its way into my backyard even with the mildest of rain.

At one time it ran nicely into the storm drain in my backyard but due to years of erosion the swale is gone and I end up with a wet, stinky, mosquito ridden backyard for several days if not weeks, depending upon the rainfall amount.

We have brought in dirt to build-up the garden and various areas only to watch $400+ wash down the storm drain. I have lost hundreds of dollars in plants due to drowning and also washing down the drain.

I have a compromised immune system and the toxic runoff prevents me from working in my garden and at times it is so bad I cannot even go out into my backyard without breaking out in blisters where ever the water or damp grass touches me.

I do not shop in Lenexa as I refuse to pay a tax that should benefit me but does not. I take my business to surrounding cities and help pay for their “extra” taxes and programs.

All I am asking the city to do is put a storm drain on the cul-de-sac; this would alleviate some of the runoff that ends up in my yard. Their response, “When your house floods we will move your house but otherwise we will do nothing.” This comes from Mike Bezhold.

The Transportation & Infrastructure Task Force has agreed to eight goals. The following is the first of the eight goals that has been developed to a final draft status. This was accepted by the Task Force on Wednesday, April 9, 2008. We welcome your comments regarding this information.

Goal 3

Continue to expand Lenexa’s role and reputation as a regional leader in transportation and infrastructure planning and implementation.

Rationale

To attract and retain high quality businesses and residents, Lenexa must continue to be seen as a leader within the region in terms of planning, implementation and maintenance of transportation and infrastructure technologies. This is also essential to retaining the high level of satisfaction currently experienced by most residents. By taking a leadership role in regional interests, Lenexa not only enhances its image throughout the greater community, but also protects its own vital interests.

Strategies

Lenexa should plan for future access to interstate and regional routes utilized by traditional modes of transportation (i.e. cars, buses, trucks, etc.) assuring the free flow of goods and services into and out of our community.
Pursue leadership roles on local and regional planning bodies, and participate in subgroups or committees to represent Lenexa’s vision for itself and the region, thereby promoting interagency cooperation.
Because regional mass transit is an emerging need, Lenexa should develop an intra-city transit policy with an eye toward intercity and ultimately regional connectivity. Developing regional hubs will keep Lenexa on the forefront of providing transit options to its citizens and workforce.

Promote multi-modal transportation options, including pedestrian, bicycle, transit and personal vehicles, in both public and private development.

Rationale

As the cost of energy increases and the city reaches full build-out and thereby greater density, multiple and varied transportation options will be desirable for the economical and convenient movement of people and goods. By leading in this initiative, Lenexa will enhance its competitive advantage within the metropolitan area.

Strategies

· Encourage transit-friendly development, such as close-set buildings, fewer cul-de-sacs, and in-back parking lots.

· Promote high-density development in strategic locations to help sustain transit options.

· Make new construction bicycle friendly, and renovate existing infrastructure to accommodate bicycles where possible.

· Build on a scale that accommodates pedestrian traffic, adding sidewalks and other amenities (i.e., landscaping and lighting) to link destinations, emphasizing aesthetics as well as safety.

· Establish task force to develop “Local Link” to promote transit and develop an identity for Lenexa (i.e., trolley cars, unique buses, etc.). Local Link should ultimately integrate with the Kansas City area’s transit network.

· Segregate commercial interstate traffic from high-density pedestrian zones.

Rationale

By 2030, Lenexa will be essentially built out. To maintain high standards of residential life while retaining and attracting quality business, Lenexa’s infrastructure should be inviting, innovative, well maintained and high quality.

Strategies

Substantive, regular reinvestment in Lenexa’s infrastructure is critical. Specific monies should be set aside after careful cost/benefit study analyses.
The longevity, usefulness and creative impact of all projects should be maximized. Lenexa’s commitment to quality should be reflected in all aspects of its infrastructure.
Maintenance of roads, curbs and sidewalks, along with other infrastructure, in established areas should be a priority, and revitalization efforts should be undertaken wherever appropriate.
Transportation safety and ease of movement throughout the city should be emphasized. Producing smooth pedestrian and traffic flow, with minimal delays, should be a priority.

solar energy

I would like Lenexa to consider passing ordinances (or whatever they are called) to allow solar panels on rooftops. These ordinances would override any community covenants that might prohibit them. These ordinances would include guidelines as to where they can be installed and other details such as appearance, dimensions, maximum number of panels, etc.

I also think composting and rain barrels should be encouraged.

helmets at the skate park

I'd like to see the city require helmets at the skate park. I was at a skate park outside of Denver years ago and their signs said "Don't even think about using this facility without a helmet." Why is Lenexa so lax in encouraging safe practices at the skate park?

The Task Force is working to extend the Vision 2020 plan for 10 more years. Our focus areas are sustainable neighborhoods, life cycle housing, maintenance and revitalization of neighborhoods, and green practices. To see our work to-date, see our minutes. You are invited to come to a meeting. The Task Force meets on Monday nights at 7:00 pm, every other week. Our next meeting is scheduled for March 24th. Our meetings are in the Lenexa Community Center.

Is Lenexa land locked?

Lenexa needs to attract high tech corporate entities and move away from indusrial parks that don't blend well with residential areas. Corporate office areas with well planned amenities will allow the community to grow with the future. We need companies looking for well educated workers that can offer decent paying jobs. Not companies looking for huge tax breaks that pay wages that don't allow people to sustain a home in our community. As commutes get longer and traffic gets worse, having a sulf sustaining community will be crucial. Lenexa needs a Mission Statement that defines the overall goals and direction we intend to follow. The urban sprawl is on the verge of swallowing up Lenexa over the next 10- 20 years and once things are built , it will be difficult to change. So please, have a clear concise plan of action that will be something that we can be proud of that makes people want to be part of this community. Let's face it, downtown is not going anywhere, it will be what it is for a long time. However, the shape and makeup of the rest of the community is going to require a well thought out plan that addresses what is important today and in the future.

seniors in the schools

I would like to see an adopt-a-grandparent program in the schools in Lenexa. They could work on tutoring things or whatever deemed appropriate but I think it would be nice to engage the senior citizens with the elementary students especially. I think the community as a whole would benefit and of course, it would be great for the kids and the seniors.

Currently, Lenexa high school students are split among four, that's right four, different schools - SM West, SM Northwest, Olathe Northwest and DeSoto. What would it take to form a new district made up entirely of Lenexa students? A Lenexa school district could serve as a unifying force for the community for years to come! Shawnee Mission is still a viable school district, but Olathe and DeSoto are making great strides. Where will we be in 2030?

Air Pollution

In going forward, I think there should be an emphasis on air quality and the reduction/prevention of air pollution. One of the most important qualities of a desired community is the lack of pollution-air/water/noise. The more trees that are taken down reduces the deflection of road noise from nearby freeways. I live on a hill overlooking the city and on some days last summer I could see a faint yellow /brown cloud over the city on high alert days. These problems usually get much worse before most people take notice. Community development should take into consideration for these things. Requirement of low emission standards. Buffering neighborhoods from noise etc.
